FABRIANO AND ECOLOGY
Some of Fabriano's papers are 100% recycled, saving 15 trees per tonne of paper produced. This production has the
"FSC 100% recycled" label, which guarantees that the paper contains only post-consumer fibres, in accordance with FSC
standards.
Fabriano fbriano promotes the use of fibres from annual plants such as cotton.
The Pioraco plant, which produces Fabriano flat-bed paper, has its own electric turbine, powered by
the current of the mountain river that runs through the village. This saves 14 million m³ of methane gas,
avoiding the emission of 26,000 tons of CO2. Fabriano thus complies with the Kyoto Protocol, certified
by ministerial authorisation no. 566.
PAPERMAKING
Fabriano's papermaking is the art of balance.
For each paper use, Fabriano follows a specific recipe to the letter, improved by generations of craftsmen.
It all starts with a lot of water and 2 to 3% of suspended fibres.
The choice of fibres for each type of paper is crucial:
- Cotton fibres are long and tubular and offer the unique combination of being very strong and soft at the same time
- Softwood fibres are long. They provide strength to the paper but, like Kraft paper, they make the surface of the
paper uneven
- Hardwood fibres are short. They offer increased opacity and surface finish.
The fibres never remain inert, they determine the properties of the paper sheet
- Softwood fibres for example tend to yellow in the sun.
- Fibres are also sensitive to moisture. They swell like spaghetti, not in length but in width. When the paper sheet is
formed, the fibres will tend to run mostly in the direction of the paper machine, the so-called running direction. This is
called the running direction. The paper will therefore deform at right angles to its running direction due to the effect
of moisture.
The choice of paper machine also plays an important role:
Trans
Removing excess water
The entire papermaking process consists of removing excess water.
The water is first removed by gravity through the machine wire. As the paper sheet begins to form, it is pressed against
a woven felt layer which gives it its grain (cold). The sheet then passes through rollers that press it to remove excess
water. It then passes through the boiler room, where its relative humidity is regulated.
Sheet finish
A whole series of operations takes place at the end of production. The grain can still be modified by heated
cylinders. The paper sheet also goes through a sizing bath. This is an essential and delicate operation. Without sizing,
the sheet of paper would only be blotting paper. Sizing is a recipe jealously guarded by Fabriano because it allows
the properties of the paper to be adapted; for example, to control the absorption of colour pigments by the paper,
to increase its resistance to scratching and gumming.
HANDMADE
Handmade paper is a unique traditional paper, the fibres are randomly interwoven. It is the ultimate
testimony of a centuries-old know-how
ROUND SHAPE
The paper sheet is formed on a round machine as it leaves the tank. This process, which is similar to
handmade paper, results in a paper with a slight flow direction. This makes the paper ideal for watercolour
painting, for example. Once moistened, this paper will deform in all directions at once and therefore remain
flat. This process also allows for the production of high grammage paper. The alternative would be to
laminate several papers of lower weights, making the paper susceptible to delamination.
FLAT TABLE
The flat table is the most widely used process in the paper industry. It offers excellent value for money.
Traditionally used to make coloured paper, watercolour student paper and drawing paper.
The fibres are dyed when they are refined in the pulper, before the headbox, the start of paper
production. The tint can be a shade of white for a publishing paper for example, or a palette of bright
colours. In this case it is a solution-dyed paper. All Fabriano colour papers meet these quality standards. This
process is the only one that can guarantee the use of colour pigments that will last over time.
FABRIANO 1264
In the Middle Ages, the Italian city of Ancona was already home to a large port open to international trade. Arab
merchants there introduced for the first time in Europe a revolutionary process invented many centuries earlier in China:
paper.
It was in the town of Fabriano, located 70 km inland, in a basin surrounded by mountains, that a unique alchemy took
place: the birth of a community of craftsmen dedicated to this invention and the emergence of entrepreneurs who
never stopped improving the manufacturing processes.
The first paper mill in Europe was set up in 1264 on the banks of the river Esino. The reputation of the Fabriano craftsmen
would only grow in Italy and Europe in the centuries to come. They spread to the major urban centres of the time.
The technical innovations of the Fabriano mills gave paper properties that were unequalled at the time. The invention of
the watermark and the gluing of paper with animal gelatine made paper forgery-proof and resistant over time. It
gradually replaced parchment in all official documents. The artists of the time also adopted this new medium with
fervour. It is known that Michelangelo was a regular user of Fabriano paper.
Soon, Fabriano's engineers used the power of the river to beat the rags mechanically, a first step towards the Industrial
Revolution of the 18th century, which would bring two major innovations to papermaking: the round form and the flat
table. The round form process is the closest to traditional papermaking, producing paper of unparalleled quality. The flat
table process, which is more industrial, is used to obtain papers with good quality/price ratios.
Continuing its centuries-old tradition, Fabriano is the last European mill to produce paper using all three processes:
handmade, round form and flat table.
THE FEDRIGONI FABRIANO FOUNDATION
Since 2011, the town of Fabriano has been home to a foundation dedicated to the most entrepreneurial of Italian
papermakers: Gianfranco Fedrigoni. This European institute for the history of paper and paper science is unique in Italy
and brings together under one roof exceptional documents, an inexhaustible source for researchers and a source of
inspiration for paper lovers. This foundation allows the heritage of Fabriano, a centre of economic, social and intellectual
development for more than seven centuries, to continue.
